Worried about gum disease? Dr. Adam Jensen can help!
Recent reports by the CDC estimate that 47.2% of adults have some form of gum disease — and the vast majority are undiagnosed.
Gum disease is the leading cause of preventable tooth loss in adults. Other consequences and effects of infected gums include:

- Chronic bad breath and dry mouth
- Teeth that appear “longer” and are more sensitive to hot/cold foods and drinks
- Increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other serious chronic illnesses
At Chugach Dental, we take pride in offering a variety of gum disease treatments designed with your comfort in mind. Call Dr. Adam Jensen at (907) 868-3000 to get a FREE second opinion and to learn more.

What causes gum disease and how is it diagnosed?
When bacteria build up in your mouth and aren’t removed by brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings, they harden into sticky plaque and tartar. Often, plaque and tartar accumulate near the gum line and can inflame (infect) the gums, leading to gum diseases like gingivitis or periodontitis.
In its early stages, when it’s most treatable, gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) may present no symptoms at all. At Chugach Dental, we closely monitor our patients’ gum health, allowing us to catch issues very early.
If we identify signs of gum disease, we’ll explain our findings and work with you to create a treatment plan designed to cure gum disease.

Is gum disease reversible?
Yes! With proper treatment, thorough at-home care, and regular exams and cleanings, you can live a life that’s free of periodontal disease.
My gums bleed a little when I floss. Do I have periodontal disease?
Maybe. Gums can occasionally bleed if you floss too aggressively. Gums that bleed regularly might be a sign of gum disease. Only your dentist can offer an accurate diagnosis.
What should I do about sore gums?
If your gums are a little sore, you can get temporary relief by swishing warm salt water around your mouth. But this is not a permanent solution and you should schedule an appointment with your dentist to learn more.
What can I do to reduce my gum disease risk?
- Avoid smoking and tobacco use
- Avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes
- Eat a healthy diet that’s high in fiber and low in processed sugar
