What is a dental bridge?

As the name suggests, a dental bridge “bridges” the gap left behind when teeth are lost. Unlike implants that are placed securely into the jawbone itself, dental bridges use neighboring teeth for stability and support.

A dental bridge can be used to:

Close the gap left behind when teeth are lost
Help you to eat and speak naturally
Give you back the ability to smile with confidence
Keep your remaining teeth from “drifting” and becoming misaligned
Help maintain an even bite and prevent jaw pain

How do bridges work?

While there are several types of dental bridges, all start by preparing the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. These teeth may need a crown or other restoration to provide a secure attachment point for the dental bridge.

At Chugach Dental, we work closely with a local dental lab that creates incredibly natural crowns and dental bridges. The end result looks, feels, and functions just like real teeth!

With proper care, your bridge and crowns can last for years — if not decades. After your bridge is complete, Dr. Adam Jensen will talk to you about how to care for it and recommend a regular schedule of dental cleanings and exams.

What’s better, an implant, bridge, or dentures?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Dr. Jensen will examine your teeth and gums, and explain your options. Together you’ll create the best treatment plan for you.

How long will a dental bridge last?

We expect most bridges to last from 5-15 years or even longer. However, this takes work on your part, including proper at-home hygiene and regular exams and checkups.

I have a bridge and it feels loose. Do I need a new one?

Not always. Depending on the age and condition of the bridge and surrounding teeth, it may be possible to bond the bridge back into place.

My gums are sore near my bridge. What do I do?

It’s a good idea to talk to your dentist. Gum disease is common near bridges and is something we keep an eye out for in our patients at Chugach Dental.
